D<\/span>espite being only a few meters away from the houses in Kato Horio, one can barely see it. Taking cover behind the abundant foliage of the plane trees and standing on four pillars, it baffles those having a keen eyesight. <\/span>What kind of construction is that in this verdant ravine?<\/b>\u00a0Why is it raised instead of touching the ground?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>These are the old baths; they were built in\u00a0the early 60\u2019s, but didn\u2019t operate for long<\/span><\/i>\u201d said Vangelis sitting in the village coffee shop on a July Sunday morning. \u201c<\/span>The villagers claim that\u00a0<\/span><\/i>they had taken a couple of showers over there. In summer, that is. They wouldn\u2019t use the baths in winter because it was cold<\/i><\/b>\u201d. With its water supply coming from \u201cKlianis\u2019 source\u201d, the building is split into small rooms, and apart from the shower stalls,\u00a0<\/span>it features three squat toilets, which however have been little used<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the few villagers can\u2019t recall which institution took the initiative to erect those community baths and outhouses. \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m not sure if it was the Ministry of Health, or funds from the Marshall Plan, no such sign exists<\/span><\/i>\u201d mentions Vangelis before adding: \u201c<\/span>The son of the then President recalls that<\/span><\/i>\u00a0it wasn\u2019t the community which set the plan going<\/i><\/b>. The craftsmen who built it were supposedly from Lesvos. They were many of them, although locals also worked there<\/span><\/i>\u201d. The purpose of this project was to familiarize the inhabitants with the use of showers and toilets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

With such practices and needs being totally foreign to them, they would fail to find any usefulness in the groundbreaking project, as they were used to wash themselves \u201cevery now and then\u201d, and only when the weather allowed it. \u201c<\/span>If I were to tell my father-in-law \u2018I\u2019m going to wash\u2019, he would scratch his head and respond: \u2018<\/span><\/i>Wash? Where are you going to wash? I wash in the sea<\/i><\/b>\u2019\u201d said Mr Yiorgos, the oldest of the congregation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not for taking a shower per se, but because they liked to \u201c<\/span>whoop it up<\/span><\/i>\u201d, says Yiannis, who talked us through his childhood memories from the baths. \u201c<\/span>We were approximately ten children. It was the president or a councilman who kept the key. We would bring twigs, like the ones you use to kindle a fire in fireplaces and ovens, open the cauldron, set the fire and waited for the water to boil.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>We were kids, but we knew our stuff<\/i><\/b>. We would get a towel and \u2013excuse my language\u2013 a pair of underpants \u2013that was all\u2013 and come over here. Then, we would take off all our clothes but for the underpants, take our shower, and when we were done, we would put on a pair of shorts and a shirt or a t-shirt and get back home.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>We did take a shower, but it was practically water fights<\/i><\/b>\u00a0either with cold or hot water.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Yiannis used to frequent the baths for four summers and hark back to the times when boys and girls engaged in the fights. \u201c<\/span>Women would step by too \u2013well, not all of them. The shower stalls did have doors, but those details wouldn\u2019t put us off<\/span><\/i>\u201d. Kourounia was a progressive village, but that didn\u2019t mean that patriarchy wasn\u2019t commonplace back then. \u201c<\/span>I only went there once; my sister visited them more often\u201d. An uncle of mine would spur me on.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I was a girl\u2026 women were shy<\/i><\/b>\u201d said Mrs Toula, the village\u2019s tavernkeeper.<\/span><\/p>\n

The youth usually visited the baths on Saturdays. At times,\u00a0<\/span>after the children had lit the fire for the cauldron and the water had boiled, some adults wouldn\u2019t miss out on taking a quick shower<\/b>. \u201c<\/span>They were covered in dust after working in the threshold, so they would say \u2018why don\u2019t I drop by and take a shower?<\/span><\/i>\u2019\u201d recalls Yiannis. \u201c<\/span>There was a police precinct here. The four officers used to visit the baths since that was the only place where they could wash<\/span><\/i>\u201d mentions Vangelis.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
