O n December 11th, it has been established by the United Nations as International Mountain Day to highlight the importance of mountain ecosystems and to remind us all of our responsibility for their conservation. Mountains serve as sources of clean water, are crucial habitats for wildlife, and provide various opportunities for recreation.
Today, we are publishing an infographic in both Greek and English to better acquaint ourselves with the 5 highest mountains in Chios: Pelineo, Edelos, Oros, Charkos, and Kamenos Lakos. All are located in the northern part of the island, have an altitude of over 1,000 meters, and consist of limestone and dolomite rocks.
In the infographic, besides the name of each peak, there is information about the altitude, coordinates, and the names of the local communities within which they are situated. The peaks of Pelinnaio, Edelos, and Kammenos Lakkos constitute both natural and administrative boundaries, hence they appear with two community names.
We love the mountains, we hike in the mountains, we remain vigilant against their threats, and we support efforts that ensure a sustainable future for these incredible areas of the planet.
